![]() ![]() Yes, as someone who writes mostly in TextEdit or Mail to stir away from distracting, unpredictable word editor user interfaces that ‘know better’ than you what word you supposedly wanted to write, I find minimal, feature-poor text editors very appealing. ![]() How very timely it was to hear from my inspiring friend at Barcelona based Herraiz Soto & Co about Ommwriter, their new feature-poor, experience-rich text editor. While interesting to think of a website’s design as the narrative, rather than website as an environment for narratives, it is acknowledged that this space engages people mostly with its written content and that it is high time to add new notes on design and creative stuff. This webspace has become a living canvas with a story that unfolds over time in visual rather than verbal form. #OMMWRITER RTF UPGRADE#Every few months I’d spend a couple of days revisiting the design, adding elements and removing others the brown paper has experienced age over time, and like me, has a couple more creases and blemishes then it did when the website was first published online but the most substantial upgrade has been its recent elevation into a more imaginative headspace. Ommwriter is a simple text processor that firmly believes in making writing a pleasure once again, vindicating the close relationship between writer and paper. In fact, over this period the site has experienced incremental design refinements. OmmWriter is a simple text editor for writers. And while my written musings have been shared in other places, this space has not been left untouched during this time. #OMMWRITER RTF UPDATE#Learn more about OmmWriter, download the free version, and purchase the full or go to the Apple App Store to grab a copy of OmmWriter for you iPad.Truth be said, this online space has had no content update for some 18 months now. You can save your document as you go, and export them to a standard text file (.txt). It’s free to download to your desktop, and if you like it, spring for the full version. The iPad version is locked-in, however, for $4.99 at the Apple App Store. As a result, they have set a minimum price of $4.11, while the average “offering” is $7.33. It’s based on what users get out of OmmWriter. The difference between the free and paid is the number of visual and audible choices. Nimble outdoes the Ommwriter in text-editing UI by a far margin, but when it comes to just distraction-free writing environment, this isnt a very able editor. OmmWriter comes in a variety of delicious flavors: It was all very subtle, and all very cool. When I stop, backspace, or slow down, the chimes would decrease. OmmWriter provides a blank screen for writing and the user can choose from five fonts, several pastel-image chromatherapy backgrounds, optional typing sounds, and a spelling checker. As I type faster and longer, it builds with intensity. You can also select how your keystrokes integrate into the soundtrack.įor instance, I chose a very light sounding wind chime. You can select a number of music loops that have a “sounds of nature” fantasy style to them. If you like to write to loud jammin’ music, stay clear of this option. Ommwriter suggests putting in your ear buds, as to silence the outside world, and fill your ears with music. You can select a number of subtle backgrounds, and the iPad version lets writers adjust the location of the on-screen keyboard. Ommwriter provides writers with the option to select both the font style and size they want to see as they weave their literary magic. It eliminates distractions by presenting a subtle substitute. OmmWriter is built around the idea of surrounding the writer’s visual and listening senses in a tranquil and subdued place. If I were to describe OmmWriter in one word, it would be: Tranquility. With OmmWriter, it’s brilliance isn’t in how much it takes away, but what it adds. Most distraction-free writing apps are about taking away.Īll you’re left with is a white screen and maybe a cursor. ![]()
